Background and Objectives:Copper is one of the antioxidant elements that holds special importance. Copper is an essential trace element involved in multiple enzymatic systems and forms part of the structure of superoxide dismutase, which plays a significant role in the body's defense mechanism by deactivating free radicals. Moreover, copper plays a role in hematopoiesis through the protein ceruloplasmin, which itself exhibits anti-inflammatory properties. Considering the low amount of copper present in milk, assuming that the use of copper as a natural antioxidant can reduce oxidative stress, strengthen the immune system, and improve growth performance of livestock, a study was conducted to investigate the effect of enriching milk with copper supplements in various forms on performance, digestibility, diarrhea status, and blood parameters of suckling Afshari lambs.
Material and Methods: To this end, 36 newborn Afshari lambs, all singleton, were used for 42 days. In the early hours of life, the lambs were transferred to individual boxes, and the flock’s colostrum was given to the lambs by bottle. At 7 days old, the lambs were divided into 3 treatments with 12 replicates each, and the treatments included: 1- control group (milk without copper supplement), 2- group fed milk containing mineral copper, and 3- group fed milk containing organic copper. The amount of copper used in the milk per lamb per day was 5 milligrams. Before feeding, the copper supplement was completely dissolved in the milk. the lambs were weighed every 21 days; during the entire period, feed samples were taken once a week for each treatment. To measure the apparent digestibility of dry matter, organic matter, crude protein, crude fat, and neutral detergent fiber, the acid-insoluble ash (AIA) method was used as an internal marker. Three days a week, the lambs’ feces were randomly evaluated. On the last day of the study, to examine changes in biochemical, antioxidant, and blood element parameters of the treatments, blood was taken from their jugular vein.
Results: According to the obtained results, enriching milk with copper supplement caused a significant increase in final weight, period weight gain, and average daily weight gain of the receiving lambs, so that the highest period weight gain and daily weight gain belonged to lambs fed milk containing organic copper (P<0.05). Also, consumption of milk enriched with copper supplement in organic and mineral forms led to improvement in the digestibility of dry matter, organic matter, crude protein, and ADF, and the highest increase in ADF digestibility was reported in the group consuming milk containing organic copper (P<0.05). Moreover, copper supplement caused a decrease in fecal score, and the best fecal consistency belonged to the group receiving milk containing organic copper (P<0.05). Enriching milk with copper reduced the number of lambs affected by diarrhea and their days of diarrhea, and the best condition belonged to the organic copper group. Using milk containing different forms of copper caused an increase in glucose of the consuming lambs (P<0.05). Copper supplement caused an increase in copper concentration in lambs, and the highest blood copper belonged to the group receiving organic copper (P<0.05). According to the present results, consumption of milk enriched with copper supplement caused an increase in ceruloplasmin and total antioxidant status and a decrease in malondialdehyde; the highest increase in ceruloplasmin and total antioxidant status belonged to the group receiving milk containing organic copper (P<0.05).
Conclusion: The best condition in performance, fecal consistency, antioxidant status, and the concentration of copper and ceruloplasmin was seen in the group receiving organic copper. Therefore, the use of organic copper in milk for suckling lambs is recommended to improve performance and health.
